Governments around the world are already witnessing a mounting backlash against AI. With that, policymakers are now laying the groundwork for safer, more transparent AI. 

Communicators should know what these AI laws are to avoid trouble down the road:

The EU AI Act

The most comprehensive AI law to date. Categorizing AI systems by risk requires transparency, human oversight, and clear labeling of AI-generated content. The EU AI Act aims to ensure that AI development is conducted in a manner that protects people’s rights while still allowing innovation to move forward responsibly.

U.S. Policies & Executive Orders

Focused on AI safety testing, watermarking synthetic media, and addressing discriminatory algorithms. Big implications for ad targeting, analytics, and content automation.

Asia-Pacific Guidelines

Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore, and South Korea promote “human-centered AI,” emphasizing fairness, transparency, and accountability. Philippine policymakers are also exploring national frameworks as AI usage expands across industries.

What Communicators Should Look Out For

AI laws tend to revolve around three concepts, all directly tied to communication work.

  1. Transparency

Audiences now expect brands to be open about how their content is created, especially with the integration of AI in the media landscape. This fact poses questions about authenticity and integrity.

When people feel deceived, trust can eventually erode. Many policies now require disclosures when content is AI-generated, watermarks on synthetic media, and clarity about how algorithms influence decisions. Transparency is not just a form of compliance; it strengthens credibility and helps audiences feel safer and informed.

  1. Fairness & Bias Prevention

AI tools that analyze audiences or moderate content can unintentionally favor or disadvantage certain groups. For example, algorithms trained on skewed or Western-centric data may overlook rural communities, underrepresent local languages, or misclassify cultural expressions common in Southeast Asia. 

Regulations prompt companies to address bias and evaluate how their AI systems make judgments to ensure that campaigns don’t unintentionally exclude or stereotype communities.

Efforts locally are also in progress, with the Data Privacy Act (Section 16), and guidelines from the National Privacy Commission’s (NPC) Circular 17-01, which require organizations to secure personal data, prevent unauthorized profiling, and be transparent about how audience information is used in automated tools.

    • Transparency is the new currency of trust. If AI played a significant role in your content, whether in drafting, ideation, or image generation, a simple acknowledgment can help build credibility with your audience. Proactively disclosing its use preempts skepticism and positions your brand as honest and forward-thinking. 
  1. Human-check everything. AI can accelerate the workflow, but accountability still rests on us.
    • AI is a powerful production tool, but it can miss nuance or context. Every piece of content must pass through a human lens for factual accuracy, brand safety, and emotional intelligence. When something goes public, the responsibility lies not with the tool, but with us. Our professional judgment is the final and most critical filter.

We must champion the development of clear, internal guidelines that govern the use of AI.     • Our role is evolving from just creating messages to helping audiences navigate the new information landscape. We have both the opportunity and a responsibility to use our skills to educate the public. Launch campaigns that teach people how to spot AI-generated content, from checking for visual artifacts to understanding an AI’s tendency for overly formal or generic language. By empowering the audience, we build a more discerning public and fortify trust in the credible information we produce.
